Bakkasel sits in the valley of Öxnadalur, in the north of Iceland. It has been long since abandoned, and every season the weather takes its toll. And yet it still stands, as a landmark to those who travel through the north that they are almost to the nearest town of Akureyri, and for me, that means I'm almost home.
The inspiration for the sky comes from photographs taken through my art classroom window at daybreak, which in the winter comes around 10:30am. One of the best parts of teaching is being able to stop the class I'm teaching, so we can take a moment to witness with awe the beauty of the sunrise together.
This piece is on cradled wood panel measuring 12" in diameter. This piece combines acrylic painting and photo screen print.
